Asia Pacific Week at Australian National University

Varun was chosen to participate in the Asia Pacific Week at Australian National University. The conference drew in diverse an innovative perspectives to challenge what development and progress means within the Asia-Pacific Region and was a chance for top scholars to establish networks and contacts.

His reflections:

Some of the highlights of my week included meeting the ambassadors of a few Asia-Pacific countries, key figures from Australian politics like John Hewson, Obama’s first director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair, Australia’s Chief of Defence Force Chris Barrie, many top ANU academics dealing with economy, globalization, climate change, society, gender and sexuality and being with absolutely brilliant young scholars from top universities around the world who are in the pursuit of something similar – making the world a better place.

I was able to make positive contributions on a wide range of panels and I can sum up my experience by quoting Paolo Freire:

“At the point of encounter there are neither yet ignoramuses nor perfect sages; there are only people who are attempting, together, to learn more than they now know.

Knowledge emerges only through invention and re-invention, through the restless, impatient, continuing, hopeful inquiry human beings pursue in the world, with the world, and with each other.”
